Thought

Those whom God has chosen, He will also preserve in Christ. Those whom God has chosen, when they suffer for Christ, they will also receive from God His comfort, so that they will not be discouraged or embittered against God for what they suffer. Those whom God has chosen will have also chosen Him to such degree that no matter what trial comes their way, they will remain faithful to Jesus.

Application

Not all who claim Christ are chosen by God, so I shouldn't be discouraged if trial and tribulations cause some to abandon Christ. That's what those difficulties are meant to do, to separate those who truly believe from those who don't. And ultimately, that's what I want, that those who truly believe are made apparent, and those who are false brothers are scattered from the rest of us. I need to encourage everyone to hold fast to Christ, no matter what comes, but I need to understand and be willing for some to fall away, so that the church can be purified.
