Passage Read: 2 Chronicles 10-13
Meditation Verse: 12:14
Thought
Rehoboam did evil because he did not set his heart to seek the Lord. It was not the most important thing to him, it was one of many things that was important, perhaps because of tradition, because that's what Israelites were supposed to do. But after a while, he turned his attention away from the Lord; He wasn't that important. And the Lord sent against him the king of Egypt, who defeated him and made him his servant. When Rehoboam saw he couldn't stand before Pharaoh, he repented and turned to the Lord, but the Lord determined to discipline them though not destroy them, so He made them servants of Pharaoh to teach them the difference between serving Him and serving man.
Application
The Lord doesn't want to be one of many things that are important to us, but He wants to be what defines us. There are many who serve the Lord and seek Him, for one reason or another, but what God desires is that we set our heart on Him, to seek Him above all things. He wants to be most important to us, so that we seek Him at all times, so that we remain faithful to Him through all circumstances, so that He doesn't need to discipline us! Pleasing Him, knowing His ways and walking in them should be more important to us than anything else. Because He will discipline me out of love for me, and the result of that discipline could leave me in less desirable circumstances, so that I truly appreciate how good it is to serve Him alone.
