Passage Read: 2 Samuel 2-5
Meditation Verses: 4:11-12

Thought

David is not in a hurry to gain the whole kingdom. He understands that the Lord has promised him to rule over all Israel, so he trusts in the Lord and waits patiently for the resolution. Though it costs lives, David is patient, knowing that God will bring about His promise in His way and timing. He's already waited this long to become king of Judah, he knows how to trust and wait. So when two men assassinate Israel's king, he takes no pleasure in it, executes the men for their rebellion, and waits for Israel to make the first move. He doesn't rush in on the spoil.

Application

I too need to learn this patience, which is why God calls His people to contentment. I need to be content with what I have and wait patiently for the Lord to show me what's next. I have no promise from Him, so I don't know what He ultimately desires to accomplish through me. But I want to build His kingdom and proclaim His glory, that I don't need to wait on, but use whatever opportunity I now have to do so, and see what God does with it. I don't need to seek great things. If God has great things in store for me, He will bring them when He's ready. But I can seek first His kingdom and righteousness, that's a command I already have.
