Passage Read: Genesis 13-16
Meditation Verses: 15:4-8

Thought

The Lord promised to give the land of Canaan and more to Abram's descendants. But Abram pointed out that the Lord had given him no children, so how could he inherit the land? Then the Lord promised to give him a son and make his descendants like the stars in the sky for number. It was then that Abram believed the Lord and the Lord credited that to him as righteousness. Having believed, he still asked, How can I know for sure? And that did not revoke his righteousness, nor did it offend the Lord, for the Lord told him to bring an offering and went on to make a binding covenant.

Application

Believing and trusting the Lord, sight unseen, does not preclude receiving a sign for assurance. I have been promised eternal life and the sign is the resurrection and ascension of Christ Himself. God delights in faith, but He's also willing to give signs for assurance. The request for a sign does not necessarily come from doubt, but from a desire to bolster faith. I suppose God is more willing to give a sign of assurance to those who believe His Word. He's not trying to make faith in Him so difficult. He is a God of His Word, and He's taken pains to prove that over and over throughout the pages of Scripture. So to doubt now, after all this evidence, that is grievous to God. How much more must He do to prove His reliability and promise-keeping? The Lord will take care of me, in my little corner of the world. I can trust that, especially as I seek to know and serve Him where I am.
