Passage Read: Hebrews 3-4
Meditation Verse: 4:11

Thought

The writer of Hebrews expects believers to make every effort to enter God's rest, lest any fall away because of disobedience. Having believed in Christ, believers are expected, even required to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. We are called to walk in obedience to His ways, and it takes effort on our part. We don't just wait for the love of God or the Holy Spirit to change us mystically or magically. The writer of Hebrews says to exert ourselves. We need to make the effort, we need to apply ourselves to knowing what God desires and doing it.

Application

As Paul tells the Ephesians, so I need to find out what the Lord's will is and do it. I'm responsible for what I know of God and I'm responsible for doing it, even though as I apply effort, God supplies grace to help me succeed. Anything He says I must believe and obey, and I must not avoid anything He says because I know I don't want to do it. I don't want to fall away because I refused to obey something He clearly said; I don't want to miss out on eternity because of something stupid, because I wasn't willing to obey some command I thought was stupid. Eternity with Christ is far more valuable than having my way in anything.
