Passage Read: Genesis 25-28
Meditation Verses: 28:20-22

Thought

It seems Jacob had not yet adopted the Lord as his God. His father honored and obeyed the Lord, who didn't ask much of him, but apparently was not very deliberate in teaching his sons about the Lord. Perhaps he periodically offered sacrifice to the Lord, but really, how Abraham and Isaac worshiped the Lord, there's not much detail. They were only expected to teach their sons to walk in the Lord's ways, doing good and right, but Jacob deceived his brother and Esau did whatever he thought was right in his own eyes. So God took the responsibility on Himself to reveal Himself to these people and call them to believe in Him. This vow here is the first mention of what worshiping the Lord would look like.

Application

For me and my sons, I don't want them to make a contract with God. I don't want them requiring anything of the Lord in order for Him to earn their worship. Unlike these people who didn't know God well, I know that the Lord is the true God who created all of heaven and earth. There is no other god. All the gods of the nations are false, so there is only one God for us and we will honor Him by our lives. We will walk in the ways He has taught; He has nothing to prove to us.
