Passage Read: Nahum 2 - Habakkuk 2
Meditation Verse: Nahum 3:7

Thought

The problem with being powerful enough to do whatever you want and treat people however you desire is that you make more enemies than friends. Indeed, no one is truly your friend. Those who act the part of the friend do so only to gain an advantage, to share in your wealth and power. They are not true friends. As soon as it becomes apparent that you cannot maintain your position and power, all friends will abandon you. They will even turn on you and help with your overthrow, in hope of taking your position and power…because they didn't learn the lesson from their own deceit. The powerful man has no friends, only deceivers who look for an advantage, just as you yourself took advantage of others to gain your position and continue to take advantage of others in your position.

Application

The poor man has no friends because he has nothing to offer them. The powerful man has no friends because he has so much to offer them that only vultures are drawn to him. The righteous man, however, draws other righteous men to him; because they are righteous, they are also true. Such are the only true friends, men who love the Lord with all their hearts and submit themselves fully to Him, they are the only ones who can truly be trusted. There may not be many such friends, but those that are will be true. Better the little of the righteous than the great gain of the wicked. It is far better to be righteous than rich or powerful.
