Passage Read: Joshua 18-21
Meditation Verses: 21:11-13

Thought

I wonder how Caleb felt about this. He had been given Hebron and all is surrounding villages, then all Israel (and God) decided Hebron would be a good city of refuge and gave it to Aaron's family as a Levitical city. So almost as quickly as Caleb received Hebron, he lost the city itself. Was he all right with that or did he feel a bit betrayed, a promise broken? God said he could have the portion of the land he helped spy out, and Hebron was that portion. Did he care about the city itself or was he most interested in the lands around it? Or was he generous and glad to give the city to the sons of Aaron and as a refuge for the manslayer, for the good of many?

Application

Whatever the case, I need to remember that whatever I have been given on earth, the Lord can take away at any time. I need to be more concerned about what the Lord wants than what I want. Anything I possess here is only temporary anyway. I'll leave it behind eventually. It's only what I receive in heaven that's eternal. So I shouldn't hold anything here too tightly. If the Lord has need of it, I should gladly give it.
