Passage Read: 2 Samuel 2-5
Meditation Verses: 5:1-2
Thought
It seems everyone knew of God's promise to David! So why the ruse of putting Saul's son on the throne and fighting David for two years? This is the problem with following the ways of the world. The people asked for a king like the nations around them, and the normal succession of kings was from father to son. Only through rebellion and intrigue, murdering the present king and his family, could someone different ascend the throne. The people followed the ways of the world instead of God, so they suffered civil war and the death of men who didn't need to die. What a waste!
Application
When God makes clear His will, I shouldn't need to look to the world to figure out what to do next. God is King whether others acknowledge Him or not. When He makes His will clear, I need to turn immediately to do it. I don't need to jump through the hoops that the world dictates. I can and should seek out and support the one God appoints. Anything else is a waste of time. The ways of the world are not the wisest, especially when the Lord has already spoken. God has given instruction and left behind patterns and examples. I need to learn from these and pattern my life and ministry by these rather than by the wisdom and methods of the world.
