Passage Read: Deuteronomy 32 - Joshua 1
Meditation Verses: Deuteronomy 34:10-12
Thought
There is no one in all the Old Testament who did the miraculous deeds that Moses did. No other prophet did as many or as mighty works as Moses. Yet, his deeds are all done by God; he didn't actually do anything but obey the Lord and do what He commanded. Elijah did a few miracles, Elisha did a few more. Isaiah did one or two? Jeremiah and Ezekiel did nothing. None of the minor prophets did miracles. Daniel and his friends had some miraculous things happen to them, to preserve their lives. Not until Jesus comes does anyone do more miracles than Moses. Jesus does so many miracles they can't even all be recorded. Almost all of them are small, personal or local miracles, but the sheer number dwarfs anything Moses did. And then His followers did miracles for years to come, and as prolific as their deeds were, the Scriptures remark on miracles less and less as time passes, until the Revelation.
Application
At two times in history there are incredible amounts of miracles: with Moses at the establishment of the nation of Israel and with Jesus at the establishment of the Church. And there will be one more time, the inauguration of Jesus' earthly kingdom. Miracles happen outside those two times, but no where near the frequency or magnitude. So I shouldn't be surprised at the lack of miracles that happen today, but neither should I believe that God doesn't do miracles at this time. They just aren't a focus and aren't needed to bring attention to or bring about any great work of God at this time. Yet God remains the same and His Spirit dwells among us, so neither should they be unexpected. Yet my attention and desire needs to be for Jesus and His kingdom, not for miracles.
