Passage Read: Leviticus 19-22
Meditation Verse: 22:9

Thought

The Lord says this multiple times in these few chapters, that He is the one who makes His people holy, therefore they are to do His commands and not defile themselves. Because God makes them holy, therefore they are to walk in His commands so as not to profane His holy name, nor defile themselves. It is the same as the New Testament. Jesus' death and resurrection makes the people holy, something we could never do on our own, not even under the Old Covenant. It has always been the case that God made His people holy, first by the sprinkling of animal blood and setting them apart from the nations and their detestable practices, and now by the blood of Jesus and setting us apart from the nations as new creations indwelt by His Holy Spirit.

Application

We have never been able to make ourselves holy, but have always been dependent on God to do that! As holy people, we are expected to walk in holiness, to protect God's name and guard our holy nature. I am to walk in obedience to God because He has made me holy by the blood of Jesus. My obedience ensures that I do not profane the holy name of God, neither do I defile the holiness that He has accomplished for me. My deeds never gain holiness for me, but only preserve the holiness given to me.
