Passage Read: Proverbs 30 - Ecclesiastes 2
Meditation Verses: Ecclesiastes 2:13-14
Thought
At the end of the first chapter, Solomon said that more wisdom and knowledge bring grief and pain. Wisdom and understanding bring pain because you can see what is true and real, and that it is all temporary and in the end for nothing good but to keep oneself fed and clothed. To be clueless would seem better because you think everything you're doing has great value, though still you eventually leave it to others. Yet wisdom is actually better, because you can see that all the striving after stuff is pointless. And you can see that what really matters is enjoying what you have and the people you share it with, and to use the days we have to prepare for eternity with God. That's the advantage to wisdom, we can see the bigger picture.
Application
So getting rich doesn't matter, but having enough is important. Gaining position may not really be all that great, because it adds complexity and responsibility to an otherwise simple life. What matters most is making preparation for our eternal home, making sure we have treasure in heaven, and interestingly that includes loving, caring for and enjoying the people God has placed around me. I don't need to be looking far off to find satisfaction and heavenly treasure. I have all I need for life and godliness right in front of me.
