With a goal to apply one truth from each day's reading to my life that day

Passage Read: Jonah 1-4
Meditation Verse: 4:11
Thought
These enemies of Israel, who would soon destroy Israel and send their survivors into exile, these enemies of Israel know nothing of right and wrong, and God has compassion on them. Even though these were people whom God would use to humble His people, yet God cared for them, cared that they didn't know right from wrong, cared that they would be condemned to hell unless they repented.

Passage Read: Jonah 1-4
Meditation Verse: 1:12
Thought
Jonah, in effect, cared more about these sailors than about his own life or the life of the Ninevites. He was willing to drown to save the sailors because he thought it would prevent the Ninevites from being saved. That is some intense hatred. I've wanted to die before but never considered actually doing something about it! And all because he knew God would be gracious and save the Ninevites, if they repented. And he actually feared they would repent!

Passage Read: Jonah 1-4
Meditation Verse: 4:11
Thought
The Lord has pity on Nineveh, even though He knows they will soon execute His anger against Israel, and they will exceed His intent and become liable to His wrath. Still He has pity on them and grants that at least one generation can hear and know of Him, repent and possibly be saved. They will stand in the judgment and condemn the generation of Jesus for failing to repent at Jesus's preaching. Will they actually be saved, that is unknown, but it may be that some did seek the Lord after this and will be found in heaven.
