Passage Read: Jeremiah 41-44
Meditation Verses: 42:5-6

Thought

These people sound so devoted and faithful, but they have been worshiping other gods in violation of the Lord's commands. They speak as if they trust that whatever message Jeremiah brings back to them is indeed the Lord's Word. "Whatever God says through you we'll do, whether it's pleasant or not!" And the Lord promises to do good to them if they'll stay in the land of Israel! That's great news! But that's absolutely not what they're willing to do, and clearly not what they expected the Lord to say. They're not so devoted as they claim; their faithlessness is exposed. They were lying from the start: They were only willing to go to Egypt, and unless the Lord confirmed their desire, they were done with Him!

Application

The real test of faith is not what I say, but what I do in response to the Word of the Lord. I may say I'm willing to do whatever the Lord asks, but will I do what I find unpleasant? Will I do what He asks if it's the opposite of what I think the Lord should be saying? Or will I claim His messengers are unreliable, His Word inscrutable, and go off on my own to do whatever I think is good and right? What will I choose today?
