Passage Read: Jeremiah 49-52
Meditation Verses: 51:5-7
Thought
Babylon was the instrument God used to overthrow Judah because of her sins. But that didn't mean God had given up His people! He remained jealous for them, as a people, though many individuals were given up for eternity. Yet now He would destroy Babylon so thoroughly that nothing would remain. So He warned His people, and really anyone who would listen, to flee from Babylon and not be caught up in her destruction. She had made the nations drunk from her wine, but no more! The city was captured in a night and eventually obliterated. This is what God is referring back to when He warns His people to flee the latter Babylon who makes the nation's drunk. Her devastation will be in a moment and complete. All who believe His promise should flee the city so as not to be caught up in her destruction. That makes it important to identify what place the Lord is referring to, so that we who believe know to flee from it or stay away.
Application
Surely at different times throughout history, one city or another fit the description best. At this point in history, it seems the United States is the nation that influences all others, and New York the city that best represents the US, at least in the eyes of other countries. Already it has been targeted many times for attack. If global power does not shift before the end times, then that would likely be the place to avoid. There is yet time, but Muslims now have an even bigger reason to hate America, and probably an even stronger desire to take worse vengeance on us, the kind described in Revelation. More reason to stay clear of New York, or any other city that could fit the description.
