Passage Read: Jeremiah 45-48
Meditation Verses: 45:4-5

Thought

Baruch lamented that his life had been overthrown by partnering with Jeremiah to be his scribe. Perhaps they were still in hiding after delivering the scroll to the officials. The king wanted to kill them, but the Lord hid them. There are those who enjoy such fruit and prosperity when they come to the Lord and begin to serve Him, like Abraham or David. But not all. Jacob had his share of trouble and grief, but remained faithful. Baruch was called my God to serve Jeremiah, which should have been a great honor! Until it became clear that all Jeremiah preached was woe and wrath. Even Jeremiah wished he hasn't been born! But for all that, Baruch was in the safest place. He would have to go through much grief and trouble, but the Lord would protect his life. At Jeremiah's side was the safest place for him!

Application

Paul had it hard serving the Lord, but he never gave up and it eventually cost his life. One way or another, following the Lord is supposed to cost our life. We give it up to follow Jesus and it may be the death of us. Who am I to think I need to enjoy comfort and prosperity? It is enough to have the privilege of giving my life to make the Lord more famous. This life will not last anyway! Why labor to prolong it? Why not spend it on behalf of the Lord and those whom He calls. That's what really gives life meaning and purpose. I should neither seek comfort nor be surprised by the troubles that come my way in serving the Lord.
