Passage Read: Psalm 15-18
Meditation Verses: 16:1-2

Thought

The psalmist prays for safety and affirms his trust in the Lord, more than that, he declares that his greatest treasure is the Lord. The most important thing in life is not to seek wealth or prosperity, but to know the Lord and delight in Him. Work is a part of life, we are dependent on food for life, raw materials for clothing and we like to have shelter over our heads; all those things are needed for living. But fancy food, lots of clothes and a big house are not necessary. Our greatest pursuit should be knowing God and doing His will, which basically amounts to loving our family and caring for our neighbors in ways defined by the Lord. But to turn life into a wealth-seeking mission is to make material things our god, and let that dictate how we live.

Application

God must be my first and greatest treasure. I need to live for what matters most to Him. I desire shelter and food and clothing, and He knows that, He's not against that. But if He is truly my greatest treasure, that will help me keep all those other things in perspective. I won't live for accumulation of things but for the kingdom of God, to reveal what that looks like by how I live today. I should be satisfied with daily bread, clothing for today, and if I have a long-lasting shelter, that's a huge bonus! But I don't want to be controlled by those things, but by my love for God and His people. That's all that really matters in this life and the next.
