Passage Read: Proverbs 18-21
Meditation Verse: 21:2
Thought
Every man believes he is doing well, he justifies himself, but the Lord knows the truth. There are those who don't even know the Lord, and they will justify themselves, they will think they are good and right in most, if not all, of their doings. Those who read the Bible in humility hopefully have a more accurate estimate of themselves, and those who humbly read their Bible and meet with others to discuss it hopefully have an even more accurate understanding of themselves. But ultimately, only the Lord knows the truth about a man.
Application
No matter how well I think I know the Bible and what God expects of me, no matter how well I think I'm doing what He expects of me, I should never be too confident in my righteousness. There is always room for growth, and who knows how many blindspots remain. Humility is the key to understanding and growth. Humility is what makes it possible to fear the Lord and so depart from evil. Though I should be encouraged that surely I'm doing so much better than when I first believed, I should never become overconfident. I should always remember that no matter how well I'm doing in my own estimation, the Lord sees the truth about me, and that should bring humility.
