Passage Read: John 1-2
Meditation Verse: 1:27
Thought
John understood what it meant that Jesus was the Son of God. Jesus was no ordinary man, but one so much greater than John, that John wasn't even worthy to untie His sandals. Jesus would come in the form of a man and seem just like John, but John understood Jesus to be so much greater than him! Jesus lowering Himself to become one of us does not make Him any less God. It does not mean I am free to treat Him as an equal. His kindness to me, His willingness to interact with me, His willingness to take on flesh and blood does not make Him any less God. So I should never approach Him or speak to Him or treat Him as if He were my equal. He is not less for making Himself like me; He remains God Himself!
Application
It is easy to lose sight of how much greater Jesus is than me. It is easy to lose sight that though Jesus willingly comes to me and reveals things to me and teaches me, yet I am still unworthy to untie His sandals. I should always stand in awe of Him, shocked and amazed that He would be willing to choose me to believe in Him and grant me a place in His eternal kingdom. Even if He calls me friend, that doesn't make me His equal! It is an incredible kindness, but should never inflate my ego. He is still so much greater than me that I'm still unworthy to untie His sandal. If He does me so great an honor, it will be because I am consumed with understanding and doing His will as my Lord and God. And He will always be my Lord and God, and I will always be the work of His hands, even if He should exalt me to His right hand!
