Thought
The new covenant is so much more glorious than the old because it is the difference between mere words and the Spirit. The Law was glorious because it revealed the very heart of God, His love for us and the love He wanted us to have for each other. But it was powerless in the face of sin. It could not free us from our slavery to sin. Instead, sin used it against us to produce in us every evil thing the Law spoke against and every evil behavior opposite to what the Law commanded. But the new covenant is a covenant and ministry of the Spirit! The Spirit brings the righteousness that the Law could only point to. The Spirit makes us righteous and empowers us to walk righteously, fully defeating the sin dwelling in us! The Spirit doesn't merely point the way but enables us to walk the way. The new covenant is far superior to the old, because it cannot fail where the old could not succeed.
Application
This is the hope of victory not just over sin but to walk in God's righteous ways! And it produces confidence to walk victoriously and boldness to present this hope to others and call them to walk in that same victory! How can we be discouraged? There is nothing that can keep us from knowing God and walking in His holiness! There is nothing that can keep us from living lives that please and honor and glorify Jesus Christ! There is nothing that can keep us from the love of God in Christ! Sin is mighty against us on our own, but it is nothing before the might of the Spirit who makes us new, holy creations and takes up residence within us when we believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ! No true Christian is weak before sin, so I can have confidence to walk in God's ways and boldness to call others who believe to reject sin and walk in God's righteousness.
