Passage Read: 1 Corinthians 8-9
Meditation Verse: 8:1
Thought
In the case of idols, every believer should know that they are nothing. But what do we do with that knowledge? Do we flaunt our superiority? Do we show off our fearlessness: mocking idols, freely eating in temples, belittling those who fear them? Paul says, "Knowledge makes arrogant." Knowledge wants to show off. The "learned" wants everyone to be impressed...with him. But love puts the needs of others first. It protects even while instructing. There is a need to teach the truth, but that doesn't mean we have to prove our victory by engaging in former habits to show they no longer control us! Love doesn't want to tempt anyone or cause anyone to stumble. Better to stay far away from stumbling blocks than to embolden another to fall back into sinful habits.
Application
Knowledge is good, but must be submitted to and directed by love. Arrogance comes so easily. It is so easy to look down on those who don't understand. Rather they need patient instruction. But it's so hard for me to be patient with those who have been instructed but can't seem to get it. Yes, even Jesus was dismayed by the ignorance of those who were supposed to be teachers in Israel or by disciples who had spent considerable time with Him, but that's no excuse for me to treat others with contempt when they don't understand what seems obvious to me. I need more compassion.
