Thought
This is what the writer is referring to when he earlier told them that they need to hold to the confidence they had at first to be sure they have come to share in Christ! It was not just a sure feeling that the Gospel was true, but they believed so firmly that they held fast to faith in Christ in the midst of suffering and persecution! They gladly accepted the confiscation of their possessions because they believed they had better and lasting possessions in Christ's eternal Kingdom! This is the kind of faith they need to hold fast to in order to know that they are saved. If instead, they fall back into thinking and living as if this life and these possessions are all they really have and are all they can really hope for, then they will be shrinking back to destruction!
Application
The faith, the confidence in the Gospel that saves is one that completely frees me from the love of this life and this world. It is supposed to free me, so that I can and do learn to live for the Kingdom of Christ and the good of others, which is ultimately their same faith in the Gospel and eternity with God. I may have things and jobs and families that I love and enjoy and work at, but none of that is more important than standing for and with Christ and His Gospel. And all is given to me so that I use them to advance Christ's Kingdom and help others know and walk with Christ. None of it was given to advance my own interests or spend on myself. I can use it for life, but my life needs to be oriented primarily around serving the Lord and helping others know Him, no matter what it costs in terms of earthly things or this earthly life. That's the saving faith that I need to persevere in to the end of my days.
