Passage Read: Proverbs 2-5
Meditation Verses: 2:16-19
Thought
This is a strong statement, that all who go to the adulteress never regain the paths of life! How can sin with an adulteress be so great as to keep a man from repentance? Solomon goes into greater detail in Chapter Five. There is something about giving in to the adulteress' enticement that breaks a man down to such extent that he wastes his strength and years on a false companion, and in the end sees that he has hated discipline and correction. He is brought to the brink of destruction, but even there, it seems he cannot come to repentance. Those who think they're wise enough to tame the adulteress end up too ashamed or stubborn to admit they were wrong.
Application
Sin with an adulteress is of such a nature that those who give in cannot find repentance in the end. How frightening is that!? Such self-deception has to take place that even in the end, when they see their ruin, they cannot bring themselves to admit they were wrong! How sad is that!? According to this, there is no hope for such a man. Perhaps with God who can do the impossible, there is yet hope? But I shouldn't be surprised if I meet a man like this and find he will not come fully to his senses. Stay away from the adulteress!
