Passage Read: 2 Chronicles 34 - Ezra 1
Meditation Verse: 2 Chronicles 34:21
Thought
Josiah heard the words of the Book of the Law, and knew the Lord was angry with Judah, even though he had begun making reforms, he had begun seeking the Lord. Nothing bad was happening to them at the time, and Josiah was bringing things in line with what he knew of God. Yet just by reading the Law, he knew God was furious with Judah. He sent to a prophetess for confirmation, and the Lord confirmed his fears. Josiah wasn't fooled by the relative peace and blessing of his day into thinking they were doing all right. The Word of God was enough to tell him that they were in trouble. The Word of God tells us we're in terrible today, but most look at how well things are going and think everything's fine!
Application
We have built up our doctrines of grace and salvation into something that no longer resembles Scripture. And we have built up our doctrines so that they speak louder than Scripture. We have our pet verses and ignore or explain away anything that doesn't fit with our beliefs. So we're deaf to the Scriptures and their warning that we are on shaky ground. We think we're fine, when the Scriptures make clear that God's wrath is piling up against us. The Word of God is true and clear and right, and I can trust it over the wisdom of well-trained men. I don't even need a prophet to confirm the Word.
