Passage Read: 1 Chronicles 23-26
Meditation Verse: 25:5
Thought
Here's a little more about Joel's son Heman! He served David as a seer and he was exalted by God in that he had so many sons and several daughters. Heman wasn't chosen just because he was a Levite, but he clearly had a deep and close relationship with the Lord, unlike his father, but much more like his grandfather, Samuel. God gave him insight so that he could act as a prophet, and God allowed him to have very many children--a sign of God's generous favor toward him. Children aren't just a blessing, but many children are a remarkable blessing, especially when they love the Lord and serve the Lord with their father. Heman was greatly blessed, despite having a father who failed to walk in his own godly father's ways. In some respects, Heman was even more blessed than Samuel.
Application
Heman was a genuine believer, as evidenced by the favor granted to him and despite having a father who didn't walk faithfully with the Lord. He's a living example of genuine faith skipping a generation, rather than ending the devotion of a family line. God's grace can step in where man fails to train his children well. That's no excuse not to be devoted and diligent in faith myself, but it does give hope that I could have grandchildren who delight in the Lord even if I have children who are lukewarm or cold toward Him.
