Meditation Verses: Habakkuk 3:16-19
Thought
Habakkuk knows what's coming, how terrible it will be, and it fills him with dread. He can't stop it; he can only wait for it to come. It's like decay in his bones; it saps his strength. But he reminds himself that his trust is in the Lord, no matter how bad things get. Though everything around him is lost and destroyed, yet He will trust in the Lord and rejoice in His promised salvation. Though disaster is decreed, yet for those who trust in the Lord, there is a sure salvation. And in that, Habakkuk finds strength. The Lord enables him not only to stand, but to leap upon the mountains.
Application
I think of the days of dread before Jesus returns, and I feel what Habakkuk felt. I know it will go well with me, but still, the horrors that are coming fill me with dread. I experience small "days of trouble" and I am distressed and distraught. I need to learn this lesson from Habakkuk, that no matter how bad things become around me, no matter how bad my circumstances become, yet I can and must trust and rejoice in the Lord. He is my strength, and confidence in His promises is what enables me to face whatever disaster befalls me. I will rejoice in the Lord no matter how bad my personal circumstances become, or how bad this whole world becomes.
