Thought
Did Mary and Joseph forget that Jesus was the Son of God? Surely by this time, they had other children and Jesus fit in like all the rest of them. Did He lead His young brothers and sisters in good behavior, so that they weren't continually reminded of His holiness? We're they so devout that they led their family well in God's ways, so that they lost sight of Jesus' uniqueness? How could they not understand Jesus' statement that He had to be in His Father's house? They knew He was no ordinary child, but did all the events of their early years fade into the fabric of safe and settled life back home in Nazareth?
Application
The busyness of a simple, ordinary life can be a dream to be longed for, but it can also be a drug to deaden us to the spiritual realities of this world and life. How could I forget that Jesus is God's Son and fail to understand that He would naturally desire to be in His house? As pleasant as life in this world can be, the Lord is more desirable, and knowing Him and spending time with Him should be more desirable to me than anything this world has to offer. There are things to enjoy here and be grateful for, but God forbid they dull me to His glory and the mission He has given His people. God forbid He speaks something that makes absolute sense to Him and I don't get it! I don't want to be so consumed with even a pleasant life that I cannot see things as God sees them.
